Home Matters

An ode to Principality Stadium, the heart of Welsh rugby.
As a Wales fan, suffice to say, this was a dream film to direct! We initially captured the film in the lead up to the Six Nations in the Spring of 2020 to coincide alongside Wales’ final home match of the tournament as a players’ homage to grassroots rugby. But with the big match postponed and grassroots rugby on hold due to the pandemic (and with the Principality Stadium converted into a COVID-19 field hospital!) we pivoted the film to become a celebration of the stadium itself and its place at the heart of Welsh rugby. As Wales took to the field at the Scarlets Stadium in Llanelli for the Autumn Nations Cup we published the film to show why home matters to Principality Building Society.
We sought to give the film an intimate aesthetic, related to the heartfelt relationship Welsh people feel toward the stadium, while still celebrating the grandeur of this iconic arena of sport. So aesthetically, we juxtaposed the players in the introspective pre-match quiet of the dark dressing room with the cavernous but empty cauldron of the stadium itself. The on-pitch grass lighting gave us a warm glow that aesthetically paralleled the pyrotechnics of game-day, but also provided a clear visual indicator that the stadium was in a state of fallow. As if it was literally being ‘kept warm’ ready for Wales’ triumphant return one day in the, hopefully, not too distant future.
